Tasks and responsibilities

The Ecclesiastical Affairs Committee addresses any topic related to church policies, including the Danish Church, other denominations and burial services.

The committee’s tasks and responsibilities can be subdivided into two primary areas: handling of bills and motions within the committee’s remit; and parliamentary scrutiny of the administration carried out by the Minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs of the government’s ecclesiastical policies and with observance of laws passed and mandates agreed in the Danish Government related to ecclesiastical affairs.

The government is responsible for Denmark's ecclesiastical policies. This is stipulated in the Constitutional Act of Denmark. Parliamentary scrutiny of how the government addresses ecclesiastical policy generally is often the Ecclesiastical Affairs Committee's primary activity. In practise, scrutiny is exercised through the standing committee members’ tabling questions to the Minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs.
