The Digitization and IT Committee

Personal data protection, data ethics and citizens’ rights in the digital universe are just three areas in the Digitization and IT Committee’s remit. The committee closely follows the development of digitization in the public and private sectors.

Tasks and responsibilities

The Digitization and IT Committee addresses any topic associated with IT and digitalisation in the public and private sectors, including IT modernisation, the application of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IT security. In its work, the committee focuses on issues related to citizens’ rights and legal certainty, personal data protection and data ethics. Moreover, the committee addresses any EU issues within its remit that the Danish Parliament has chosen to prioritise.

Its tasks and responsibilities can be subdivided into two primary areas:

  • handling of Bills and motions within the committee’s remit
  • ongoing parliamentary scrutiny of ministers’ administration of the Government’s digital government and IT policies

Parliamentary scrutiny of how the Government addresses IT and digital government policies generally is often one of the committee's primary activities. In practice, parliamentary scrutiny is exercised through the standing committee members’ tabling questions to the relevant minister, either as Section 20 questions (verbal or in writing), questions in committee, questions in consultation or as enquiries.

Specialist ministry

The committee’s specialist minister is the Minister for Digital Government and the Committee’s specialist ministry is the Ministry of Digital Government and Gender Equality. The Ministry comprises a central department with the Danish Agency for Digital Government and Statistics Denmark.

Individual ministers are responsible for digitalisation and IT within their own ministry. Where relevant, the committee works with other committees and discusses cases and proposals in other committees’ remits from the IT and digitalisation perspective.

Organisations

Many organisations, associations and members of the public, etc. are interested in following the work of the Digitization and IT Committee and influencing legislation within its remit, including private companies and stakeholder organisations, public institutions and security policy organisations.

Organisations and members of the public are welcome to contact or make an appointment for an audience with the Digitization and IT Committee if they wish to notify the committee of a topic within its remit.

Study trips

Visits and study trips in Denmark and abroad are a source of knowledge and inspiration for members of the Digitization and IT Committee. The purpose of such visits/trips is to ensure that committee members gain particular insight into an area of interest. A delegation of committee members, often comprising 6-8 members of the Danish Parliament, take part in the committee’s study trips.
