The Senior Citizens Committee

Cases regarding senior citizens, including aid and support for the elderly, care homes and assisted living housing are all within the committee’s remit. In addition, the Senior Citizens Committee addresses matters related to dementia and relatives, and the challenges and issues associated with loneliness.

Tasks and responsibilities

The tasks and responsibilities of the Senior Citizens Committee can be subdivided into two primary areas:

  • handling of Bills and motions
  • parliamentary scrutiny of government work

The committee also ensures that it maintains a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of senior citizen political agendas.

Parliamentary scrutiny is exercised through, e.g. the committee members’ tabling questions to the Minister for Senior Citizens or other ministers. Questions can be tabled in four ways: as questions in committee, to which the minister responds in writing, as questions in consultation, to which the minister is invited to respond orally at a meeting, Section 20 questions and enquiries.

The committee also calls so-called expert meetings and hearings, which are either open or closed to the public.

Organisations and members of the public are welcome to contact the Senior Citizens Committee in writing or to make an appointment for an audience if they wish to notify the committee of a topic within its remit.

Specialist ministry

The committee’s specialist ministry is the Ministry for Social Affairs, Housing and Senior Citizens.

Organisations

Many professional organisations, associations, NGOs, think-tanks, research institutions and international organisations, etc. operate within the senior citizens field. Many of them have an interest in following the work of the committee and influencing legislation within the committee’s remit.

Study trips

Visits and study trips in Denmark and abroad are a source of knowledge and inspiration for members of the Senior Citizens Committee. The purposes of such visits/trips is to ensure that committee members gain particular insight into an area of interest. A delegation of committee members, often comprising 6-8 members of the Danish Parliament, takes part in the committee’s study trips.
