The Danish opt-outs from EU cooperation

After the Danish population rejected the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, Denmark negotiated four opt-outs from EU-cooperation. Three of the four opt-outs are still in force today, while the opt-out on defence was abolished following a referendum in 2022.

The European Parliament is the parliamentary assembly of the European Union.  It is the only EU-institution directly elected by the citizens of the Union. Since 1979 direct elections have taken place every five years.

What is the EU Information Centre?

The EU Information Centre is a politically neutral information service providing factual answers to questions about the EU. Fast, impartial, factual and free of charge. 

The EU plays a pivotal role in the lives of Europeans and for all people living in Denmark. But gaining access to EU information and understanding the way the union works, can be a daunting task: especially if you’re unsure about where to begin or are deterred by the complexity that many EU issues hold. Thisis where the Danish Parliament’s EU Information Centre enters the picture.

The objective of the EU Information Centre is to provide clear and factual answers to any EU-related questions you may have or to guide you the information you need.
