The Employment Committee

Employment market policies in their broadest definition and services to people, who for one reason or another fall out of the labour market are the primary topics addressed by the Employment Committee.

Tasks and responsibilities

The Employment Committee addresses any topic associated with labour market conditions, including maintenance benefits payable to insured and uninsured people who are temporarily or permanently unemployed, e.g. unemployment benefits, cash benefits, disability and retirement pensions, and supplementary social benefits, such as housing benefits/rent subsidies, child allowances, benefits in the form of single payments in pursuance of the Assets Act, etc., as well as benefits in connection with sickness and childbirth.

The committee also addresses topics associated with active employment measures, labour market legislative issues, occupational health and safety, work-related injuries and international cooperation regarding social benefits and insurance, etc.

The committee’s tasks and responsibilities can be subdivided into two primary areas, i.e. (i) handling of Bills and motions within the committee’s remit and (ii) parliamentary scrutiny of the Minister of Employment’s administration of legislation within the committee’s remit, including:

  • Section 20 questions (verbal or in writing)
  • written questions in committee
  • questions in consultation
  • enquiries
