The Speaker of the Seimas, the Lithuanian parliament, visits the Danish Parliament

2024-05-08

As part of her first official visit to Denmark, the Speaker of the Seimas, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen visited the Danish parliament on Tuesday 7 May.

She was received by the Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Søren Gade, and by members of the Presidium in the elegant Conversation Room.

The visit confirmed the close ties between Denmark and Lithuania. Denmark was the first country to resume diplomatic relations with Lithuania after the breakup of the former Soviet Union in 1991. Ever since Lithuania achieved independence, Denmark has provided extensive economic and political support. Not least in connection with the country's accession to the EU and NATO.

Lithuania has felt the threat of Russia's war against Ukraine closely. The country shares a border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad on the Baltic coast. The war was therefore one of the key issues in talks between the Danish speaker, members of the Presidium and the guest from Lithuania.

Søren Gade assured Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen that the entire Danish Parliament supported aid for Ukraine and the imposition of tough sanctions on Russia.

After the official visit, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen was given a guided tour of the Chamber, followed by a trip in the visiting area where she was treated to observing a class of schoolchildren engaged in the educational game "Politician for a Day".

Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen was received by H.M. King Frederik on Wednesday morning.

As her surname indicates, the Lithuanian Speaker of the Seimas has close ties to Denmark. She is married to the Danish chess grand master Peter Heine Nielsen, whose family come from Holstebro. Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen herself is a grand master in the classic board game and a former ladies European champion.
