On Saturday 16 June, the Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Mogens Lykketoft, met the President of the People’s Republic of China who paid the first official visit by a Chinese head of state in the history of Denmark.

After the meeting, Mogens Lykketoft said: “The Chinese President and I had a short, but good exchange of views. Both sides emphasized the need for developing the cooperation, not only with respect to sustainable development, but also as regards the actual cooperation between Denmark and China. At the same time, the Chinese President called on more extensive cooperation and exchange between the Danish Parliament and the Chinese National People's Congress, which I fully approve.”

President Hu Jintao visited Denmark at the invitation of the Danish Queen. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Liu Yongding, and a large delegation comprising ministers and other Chinese key decision makers.

The Speaker of the Danish Parliament also had the opportunity to meet the Chinese guests on Friday evening, where he participated in a banquet for President Jintao and his delegation in Christiansborg Palace hosted by the Queen, and again Saturday at a lunch for the guests hosted by the Danish Prime Minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

During their stay in Denmark, the Chinese ministers who were part of the President’s delegation took the opportunity of participating in a Sino-Danish business conference and to meet their Danish counterparts.

Hu Jintao has been President of the People’s Republic of China since 2003. He is also General Secretary of the ruling communist party and commander in chief of the armed forces of the country. Formerly, he was, among other things, governor of Tibet. Jintao is an engineer by education.
