Succesful European Interparliamentary Meeting on Europe's Fiscal Challenges

2012-03-22

The Budget Pact, Transaction Tax and the EU's Multiannual Financial Framework were on the agenda when the Finance Committee and the Fiscal Affairs Committee of the Danish Parliament hosted an interparliamentary conference on March 19th and 20th in Copenhagen.

During the conference a number of speakers presented their views on Europe's current fiscal challenges. Among the speakers were Danish Minister of Economy and the Interior, Ms. Margrethe Vestager, and EU Commissioners Algirdas Šemeta (taxation) and Janusz Lewandowski (budget issues).

The conference was chaired by the chairmen of the Finance Committee and the Fiscal Affairs Committee of the Danish Parliament, Ms. Marianne Jelved and Ms. Gitte Lillelund Bech. The two chairmen believe that the speeches and the ensuing debate gave the conference attendees a lot of useful input on how the European countries can tackle some of the fiscal problems in the wake of the financial crisis: "Although we received many different opinions during the conference, there seems to be a widespread consensus that regulation of the financial sector may be needed if we are to avoid future financial crises."

The two chairmen also believe that the conference could be the starting point of a closer cooperation between national parliaments on the financial and fiscal areas: "The conference showed us that there is a widespread interest among European parliamentarians working with financial and fiscal issues in the national parliaments to meet regularly and discuss these issues of common interest such as the budget problems that many European countries are facing these years."
