On 22 and 23 January, Andrian Candu was on an official visit to Denmark. He has been the driving force behind the trade agreement between Moldova and EU, and has strongly advocated for positioning his country closer with Western Europe. This is, however, a complicated task owing to the fact that there is still strong support in Moldova for a closer relationship with the Russian Federation.

One of the reasons why the political situation in Moldova is tense is the breakaway region Transnistria. The region is located in the eastern part of Moldova and has a population of half a million people. Transnistria, with its ethnic-Russian minority population, currently functions as an independent state with its own Parliament and President. However, Transnistria has not been recognized by any other country.

”We discussed issues regarding Moldova’s position as a new nation trying to find its international role in Europe. The Moldavian Speaker expressed the hope that Denmark will support Moldova in the reform process, including introducing measures aimed at fighting corruption and securing transparency in the country’s public sector,” says Ms. Pia Kjærsgaaard, Speaker of the Danish Parliament. Speaker Andrian Candu also met with members from the Faroe Islands Committee, the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Foreign Policy Committee.
