Mongolia and Denmark

2015-08-26

The Danish Parliament and the Danish Mongolian Society will hold a conference marking 25 years of democratic development in Mongolia.

Mongolia held its first free parliamentary elections in 1990. Shortly following the transition to democratic governance, the Danish Government and the Danish Parliament were quick to assist the new parliament in its transition. The assistance consisted of everything from equipment for the establishment of a parliamentary library to expert assistance in legal and parliamentary procedures.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of this very important transition, the Danish Parliament and the Danish Mongolian Society will once again set focus on the development of democracy in Mongolia through holding a conference on Monday, September 21, 2015. The Conference will feature the participation of prominent decision-makers and experts from Mongolia and Denmark.

The Conference may also be viewed as an extension of a renewed partnership between the two parliaments. A new agreement was signed in 2014 which will facilitate the exchange of best practices and knowledge sharing between the staff of both parliamentary administrations. The renewed cooperation will focus on the digitization of parliamentary works and library assets, parliamentary communication strategies as well as cooperation with the media.

The theme of the conference will be “25 years of democratic development in Mongolia”. The conference will focus on the next quarter century and the specific challenges the country has with regard to the extensive prospects for the extraction of raw materials coupled with Mongolia’s particular geopolitical situation. The meeting will have the form of a round table (political) debate between specially invited stakeholders and will be open to the public.

The conference will be opened by the Speaker of the Danish Parliament and will be moderated by Mette Holm, who recently published a book about Mongolia.

It will take place in the Christiansborg Palace and will start at 09.00 and is scheduled to end at 12.45.

Registration requests should be sent to: [email protected] on or before Monday, September 14, 2015.

The conference will be aired live on the Parliamentary TV channel in Danish, and will also be streamed in English on the Parliamentary website: http://www.ft.dk/webtv/video/20131/fpr/tv.2777.aspx
