Interparliamentary Conference on the Reform of the EU Common Agricultural Policy

2012-06-01

The EU Common Agricultural Policy reform and the environmental aspects of farming will be the subjects of debate when European MPs meet in the Danish Parliament on 7-8 June 2012. The Committee for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Committee and the Environment Committee will host the conference, which will take place in Landstingssalen in Christiansborg.

The Conference will focus on the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (the CAP) which is facing an extensive reform, which is planned to come into force in 2014. The first half of the conference will focus on the CAP, as seen from a Danish farmer’s perspective, as well as on the idea of adopting organic farming methods as a new kind of agricultural business model.

On the Conference’s second day, we will turn to the global and environmental challenges of the CAP reform in order to debate, among other things, the opportunity of “greening” the CAP. The greening element forms a central part of the European Commission’s proposal for the future CAP.

The speakers of the conference include Danish Minister for the Environment, Ms. Ida Auken, Secretary General of Copa Cogeca, Mr. Pekka Pesonen, Danish MEP, Mr. Dan Jørgensen, and Chairman of the Danish Dairy Board, Mr. Steen Nørgaard Madsen.

Monday the 7 June, the European parliamentarians will visit the Danish company Aarstiderne (the Seasons), an organic farm and Danish Company in Humlebæk. Here, they will be introduced to founder and co-owner of Aarstiderne, Thomas Harttung, who will present the special consumer centered business model used at Aarstiderne.

The Conference will be chaired by Mr. René Christensen (the Danish People’s Party), Chairman of the Committee for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Committee of the Folketing and Ms. Lone Loklindt (the Danish Social-Liberal Party), Chairman of the Environment Committee. Participating in the conference will be members of the EU national parliaments and the EU candidate countries as well as members of the European Parliament.

Please find on the right a link for the full programme and a list of links for background material concerning the conference. This conference ends a series of interparliamentarian conferences hosted by the Folketing as part of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2012.
