The Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Mogens Lykketoft, met Zimbabwe's Minister for Finance.

The Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Mogens Lykketoft, met Zimbabwe's Minister for Finance, Tendai Biti

Zimbabwe's Minister for Finance, Tendai Biti, visited the Danish Parliament on Thursday 23 February where he met the Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Mogens Lykketoft. The two last met when the Foreign Affairs Committee visited Harare in the summer of 2010. In spite of attempts to mediate on the part of neighbouring countries, Zimbabwe has a very weak coalition government comprising President Mugabe and the MDC, which has headed the opposition to Mugabe's despotism. Mr. Biti represents MDC, as does Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, and has succeeded in stabilising the country's economy under extremely difficult circumstances.

During the meeting, there was time to discuss the possibility of holding an absolutely free general election in Zimbabwe and the current political and economic situation in the country. Mogens Lykketoft expressed his unreserved support for MDC's struggle for democracy in Zimbabwe.

During his visit to Denmark, Mr. Biti will meet the Minister for Development Cooperation and members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, among others.
