The Immigration and Integration Committee

The committee works with asylum and refugee policies, foreign nationals and integration. The committee monitors government policies and exercises parliamentary scrutiny with the administration carried out by the government of legislation in these areas.

Tasks and responsibilities

The committee addresses many topics regarding asylum and refugees, foreign nationals and integration. These include:

  • conditions for asylum-seekers
  • the rules for residency in Denmark, e.g. family reunification, humanitarian residency, foreign students, and the opportunities offered to foreign workers to reside in Denmark
  • integration of refugees and immigrants
  • preventing radicalisation and extremism

The committee’s tasks and responsibilities can be subdivided into two primary areas:

  • handling of bills and motions within the committee’s remit
  • ongoing parliamentary scrutiny of the administration carried out by the Minister for Immigration and Integration of the legislation in this sphere

The government puts forward most bills in this sphere. These are debated not only in the Chamber, but also by the committee. Like any other member of the Danish Parliament, committee members may put forward bills and motions within the committee’s remit.

Parliamentary scrutiny is the committee’s second important activity. The Danish Parliament can exercise parliamentary scrutiny of administration carried out by the government of the legislation pertinent to this area, e.g. administration of the Aliens Act, regulations for family reunification, etc. Scrutiny may be exercised by tabling questions to the Minister for Immigration and Integration.

Study trips

The committee occasionally makes study trips in Denmark and abroad, to gather knowledge and inspiration. Committee members often participate in international congresses, usually under the auspices of the UN and EU.
