Tasks and responsibilities

The Naturalization Committee’s most important task is to process two bills each year that grant applicants Danish citizenship (naturalization). Danish citizenship is granted by statute. This is stipulated in Article 44(1) of the Constitutional Act of Denmark. The bill is called the Act of Notification of Naturalization.

These bills contain the names of people who have applied for and meet the requirements for obtaining Danish citizenship.

In addition to the two bills, the committee also addresses cases in which applicants do not meet all the requirements for obtaining Danish citizenship and where they seek dispensation from one or more of those requirements. The Immigration and Integration Ministry brings dispensation cases before the Naturalization Committee. That a case is brought before the Naturalization Committee does not necessarily mean that the applicant in question is certain to be granted dispensation or to be added to the Act of Notification of Naturalization.

The committee’s tasks can be subdivided into four primary areas:

  • handling of bills and motions regarding naturalization legislation
  • processing dispensation cases
  • ongoing parliamentary scrutiny of the government’s administration of legislation regarding naturalization by tabling questions to the Minister for Immigration and Integration.
  • organises hearings, expert meetings, etc. to discuss naturalization

You can read more about the rules for obtaining Danish citizenship at the official website of The Ministry of Immigration and Integration.
